Had a father son team from Toronto Canada out this morning. Fishing the weighted lines was tough for them but they had a good enough time to say they are coming back after some casting practice. We had the dolphins doing a show for us and they had some shots at some but no takers

I guess you could say I am back in the full swing of things. Three guided outings in 4 days and no ill effects to the old body. All the pieces are still where they should be. I am very happy. Saturday I had the Bakersfield group out and they hammered the perch. Monday I had a young man out who gave it all he had. In his own words when he hooked the corbina we were targeting, ” I AM FREAKING OUT”. He lost the fish but beat out the guy who had been stalking that fish before we got there. The kid is fearless and going to put us all to shame in the future, so much heart.
Today father and son came out from Santa Barbara and dad kept trout striking while the son got his fish.

We had leopard sharks all around us but tried to stay away from them until Jesse hooked one that came unbuttoned when it ran towards him and he could not strip fast enough, no one could have… The water was clear, the sun was out, it was 74 degrees, good to be back.

If you want a rocket launcher of a fly rod, try the ECHO EPR!! I got the 6wt the other day, gave a casting lesson today and used it in the lesson. Well, not at first. We started off with a ION XL 6wt with the 225grn Surf line and the client was easily casting 60 feet and felt very comfortable with that combo. Then I handed him the EPR with the 260grn Surf line and he threw about a 75 foot cast. The look he gave me was hysterical. Guess who wants one now? This was his first attempt at fly casting. I wanted to add that they list this rod as “Super fast and super powerful”

I went out 3 hours before peak low tide and found one hell of a piece of structure, what I call a reversed Nike swish. Think pointy end on the beach and large portion going out to sea. It was probably the biggest one I have ever seen in that is was 200 yards long. As the tide was going out the water would rush downhill, to the left, with each surge taking all the water with it. This made keeping a 260grn line straight impossible. I found a good hole farther down the beach and fished it for a handful of perch on the Boos Beach rod, all 12 feet of it. It is so much fun to throw this rod. It was beautiful out there today.

Charles from Massachusetts here visiting his daughter with his first ever fly caught barred surf perch. First client since the accident and boy, was I sore afterwards. More to follow.

Hit the beach today 3 hrs into the out going tide and found a honey hole. Or should I say they were where they were supposed to be. Lots of structure filled in already but the fish were holding on the edge of a drop off. I fished this spot for about 30 minutes and had 12 to hand ranging from cookie cutter 8-9 inches with smallest being about 4 inches and biggest around 11 inches. All but the smallest had the blackish markings of make’n with the love.
