Welcome to
FLY FISH THE SURF
- As of January 1, 2024 the rate for a 5 hour beach outing is $250.00
- I have been a full-time guide for surf fly fishing for over 22 years in an area blessed with some of the West Coast’s best beach fly fishing and outdoor scenery.
- I am a Pro Staff member for Rajeff Sports (Design Team), Waterworks-Lamson Reels, Dr Slick, Sockwa and Solarez UV Epoxy, designer and manufacturer of Baermann’s Stealth Surf Lines, Author of the book, Fly Fish The Surf.
My name is Lee Baermann and I fly fish in the surf over 300 days a year. As a fly fishing in the surf guide, I know where the fish are, what techniques will work, and which flies will catch them. As a client you can expect a friendly, informative and fun day on the beach. If you are not set up for the surf; rods, reels and stripping baskets are available while I will supply the Surf Flies and leaders for the day. We’ll also go over how to read the water, look for holes, troughs and fish the “rough” water. So, it does not matter if you are an experienced fly fisherman or a beginner, I will accommodate your needs and fishing experience level.
I cover the northern end of LA County, all of Ventura County and the southern section of Santa Barbara County, so there’s plenty of beach to fish.
Schedule is dependent on tides and weather although there are beaches that fish great at lower tides and ones that fish great at higher tides. So, either email me flyfishthesurf@yahoo.com or call Tel (805) 486-8226.
Lee also does surf fly fishing seminars and fly tying presentations across Central and Southern California to numerous fly fishing clubs and retail fishing businesses, including as Eric’s Tackle, Bass Pro Shops, The Fisherman’s Spot, and Bob Marriott’s, to name a few. You can also catch Lee at the Long Beach Fred Hall Show each year, stop by his booth and hi.
NEW … Baermann’s Stealth Surf Fly Line
This is my proprietary surf fly line designed for stealth, easily loading a fly rod for effortless and fun fly casting for both beginners and experts. All three lines have a built-in shooting head in the rear of the sinking portion that makes the line a joy to cast with bright running lines for seeing when the rod is loaded while learning to cast These lines are not exclusive to the surf but work in Lakes, Streams and Offshore Saltwater Environments.
225grn Surf Fly Line: This line is 100 feet long with a bright yellow running line, 26.5 foot sinking portion that has a built-in shooting head with factory loops at each end. It has a wet sand colored sinking portion for stealth when sight casting to that elusive corbina. I like it on a 5wt or slow 6wt but I chase corbina with it on a glass 6wt for soft landings of the fly and ease of loading the fly rod.
260grn Surf Fly Line: Same dimensions as the 225grn but with a chartreuse running line, this line qhen paired with a fast 6wt well cast like a rocket launcher. This is my everyday surf line and I have even used it offshore for calico bass. It casts great on a fast 6wt, a 7wt and a slow 8wt.
310grn Surf Fly Line: This line is 100 feet long with a orange running line, 28 foot sinking portion that has a built-in shooting head with factory loops at each end. It has a wet sand colored sinking portion for stealth when all you have is a 8wt for the surf or the wind and swell is up and you want to keep in touch with the fly. It’s also perfect for casting to leopard sharks on the beach, calico bass or bonita out at our Islands or at the lake for largemouth bass and stripers.
A nice corbina on the 225grn Stealth Surf line.
I have even used the 260grn offshore for calico bass but it is still my go-to surf line.
