Surf Species

Southern California surf fly fishing provides an excellent opportunity for fly anglers who don’t have access to a boat, or who simply prefer to fish for near-shore species. Surfperch, croaker and corbina are among the most frequently caught species along Southern California beaches, and you also may hook halibut, bat ray and leopard shark. Morning, evening and during an oncoming high tide are the best times of day for beach fishing, and various species are available throughout the year, but the summer months typically provide the most productive fishing.

Offshore and Baja Species

We don’t restrict our saltwater fly fishing to just the Southern California surf, we also fish offshore, around the Channel Islands, and down Baja way. The fish species in these areas is so diverse and can change from season to season depending on water temperature and currents. Species can include yellowtail, halibut, calico bass, white sea bass, sail fish, dorado, bonito, rooster fish, ladyfish, pargo, cabrilla, hogfish, black skipjack tuna, barracuda, and triggerfish to just name a few.
