I had a group from Hardworking Capitol out this morning, all newbies to the wet sand. We had perch caught and one corbina. Lots of misses but eventually everyone got in the act. So, to the fly that caught the corbina. Yesterday Justin got his on a small white merkin after all other flies got nada. I go home and tie up a grey merkin, once we some working the skinny I tie it on Jeff’s leader. Not long after he hooks up so I am tying some more of those up…

Austin W with another corbina. We really worked hard for this one going deep into the fly box and getting it at the 11th hour.

So we start out looking (fishing) for halibut but the water is so thick with kelp it covers the fly on each cast. We see corbina at our feet so we switch rods, 8wt to a 6wt and go after the corbina. All we see is them going out, never coming in with the pitch of the shore so it is Blind Sight Casting. No takers and now the surf camps are in full swing so we go to another beach. More corbina but same scenario. All we see is them headed out. Now this beach is filling up and we are talking while the line has been cast and left to sit there. Line goes tight, we both get excited and the fight is on. It comes to hand quickly but alas, foul hooked in the back. You can make out the pink fly in the middle of its back. We really thought one picked up the fly as it sat there while we BS’d.

Had Walter here from Visalia out on the wet sand and after a few missed takes, he got what he came for.

Dave B sent me this photo of a good size perch he caught on a brown checkerboard near Santa Cruz. I sent that order out in June and it has produced for him.

Had a group out today from Project Healing Waters. Some had never been on the wet sand with a fly rod and others had been out with me before on a group outing. Nice to get them back out and on the water. Snagged a few thornbacks and shovelnose with one fair hooked corbina.

Got Andrew out on the wet sand this morning and we found lots of perch. Good news, Andrew can cast well so it was easy getting him in to perch. Bad news, he hooked and lost two Corbina…but learned a lot from that. I just could not get him to smile.

Got on the wet sand early this morning to a fine mist, almost rainy conditions. We ignored it and fished away. Found some perch right away, I got stuck with all the little ones. I started off using my ECHO EPR 6wt Rocket Launcher but switched to my ECHO Bad Ass Glass 6wt to chase corbina. I also switched to a new fly, a sand crab tied with checkerboard chenille, a checkercrab? Third cast I had a nice corbina on and soon landed it. Lots of perch to hand, a corbina and a landed snagged shovelnose. The surf species were out in force this morning as we even saw a few leopard sharks. Allen with his corbina.

Had a father son team from Toronto Canada out this morning. Fishing the weighted lines was tough for them but they had a good enough time to say they are coming back after some casting practice. We had the dolphins doing a show for us and they had some shots at some but no takers
